Cambodia-South Korea Relations Under Hun Manet and Future Cooperation
As Cambodia commemorates the year of Prime Minister Hun Manet’s tenure in office, it is a fitting moment to contemplate the status of Cambodia-South Korea ties and consider ways to enhance this vital alliance further since establishing diplomatic relations in 1997. The two nations have maintained an advantageous rapport characterized by economic collaboration, cultural interchange, cultural exchanges and common political objectives.
Hun Manet’s ascent to leadership coincides with a juncture in Cambodia’s foreign strategy as it strives to maintain a harmonious equilibrium in its global alliances amidst evolving worldwide landscapes. The camaraderie between Cambodia and South Korea has thus far been amicable; nonetheless hurdles lie ahead as they traverse the aftermath of the pandemic recovery phase and grapple with security issues alongside the enduring sway of major global players. However, difficulties also pave the way for prospects to enhance the mutual relationship between Cambodia and South Korea.
Economic collaboration plays a role in the relationship between Cambodia and South Korea as South Korea has been a major investor in Cambodia for years now and has actively participated in the growth of various sectors like infrastructure and technology along with making significant investments in the garment industry and real estate over the last twenty years.
The government led by Prime Minister Hun Manet has highlighted the importance of enticing investments to boost economic development further within the country’s borders. The continued partnership with South Korea remains crucial in this regard. However certain hurdles like economic rivalries, especially with Vietnam and the disruption in global supply chains caused by the pandemic are impeding the potential expansion of South Korean investments in Cambodia.
Apart from their ties the connection between Cambodia and South Korea also encompasses significant political and security aspects. South Korea holds a role in the geopolitical landscape of East Asia, especially concerning the Korean Peninsula and North Korea.
